When God Said Ha!, Ha, Ha, Ha

I'm odd. Not odd like you want to run and hide yourself or your wallet from me odd. I'm just funny, ha, ha odd. Things strike me funny that might not necessarily make someone else laugh, but they do make me laugh. I think that God enjoys a laugh once in a while too sometimes. I don't think He sits there and orchestrates every little thing that happens in people's lives. There is one instance, however, where I think that He had a twinkle in His eye and saw an opportunity that He just couldn't resist.....

It happened on a frigid Christmas Eve night back in the late 90's. One of our local parishes used to have a live nativity in the barn right next to the rectory. On that night, I drove there straight from work. It was a very cold day but when the sun went down, and the wind whipped up, it got quite blustery outside, so I dashed from my car, down the steps and into the barn. There were a few people inside, but because of the cold they bustled away and left me in there alone. The inside is set up so that when you step through the door you walk into an area that has waist-high shelves with bales of hay underneath them. They are against the three walls~ behind you, to your left and in front of you. To your right,  the wall is about 15' away and that is where the animals graze. A 3' fence keeps them in that enclosure and that juts out of the larger barn doors and down the driveway so that the animals have some space to roam. On a cold night like this, though, they were nestled under the stage area, on which the nativity scene was, and huddled around the interior of the barn, rather than outside. Standing in there, looking at the nativity, feeling the air, being engulfed by the silence, is an amazing experience. I stood there for a few moments just breathing in the smell of the hay and letting the stress of the work day evaporate from me.

It was while I was standing there that I noticed several pieces of mail sitting on the shelf right in front of me. One of them was opened and the letter was just lying there for me to see. It was from a large chain store giving them a discount. I pushed the envelopes around with my gloved finger and there were quite a few of them, but, there was one envelope, unopened, that I could clearly see the address from and well, that one really intrigued me...

I just stood there and looked at it. While standing there I shifted my weight from one leg to the other and cocked my head. My finger reaching up to stroke my chin while I contemplated why they were there in the first place. I had that little niggling nagging going on in my head. Open it, it said. Nobody will know it was you, it said. On the other hand I had another little voice saying, it's none of your business. Leave it alone. Don't touch it. Decisions, decisions. I was so engrossed in my own thoughts that everything around me became unfocused and my fingers now lingered over the mail and my fingertips pushed it around again.  I was probably standing there for a full 3 minutes and finally, just as my hand was closing around that one envelope, a sound EXPLODED in my ear...

MAAAAARRREEEE!!! MAAAAARRRREEEE!

I almost shot out of my high heeled shoes. Standing next to me, with his head hung over the fence, was the largest freaking goat I had ever seen. I was so engrossed, I never saw it coming.

Of course, instantaneously I knew that I was about to do something wrong, so I looked up and said, "well played, God. I get it." I scampered out of there like the place was on fire.

When I was leaving, I scooped the mail up in my hands and rang the doorbell of the rectory. It was safely deposited into the hands of the priest that answered the door. Of course, I roared with laughter all the way home, after the shock wore off. In fact, it still makes me laugh all of these years later and I do love to share it too as I am doing here.

I think it was one time that God did say HA to me. How else would the goat know my name? Just kidding folks! Get it? KIDding. Okay, I'll stop now.

True story and one that I think will put a smile on your face. Have a fabulous week and give someone else a smile. There seems to be a LOT of people that need one these days.

Peace
Mare

Keep CHRIST in Christmas

Crikey, here we go again. Another mall has consumers up in arms because there isn't a Christmas tree  but a small "holiday" tree or Santa is being placed at the end of the long hall to the left of the water fountain on the lower section of the mall near the parking garage. Don't even get me started on the nativity displays which are nowhere to be found. They have been reduced to diorama, shoe box size, or not displayed at all because someone was offended. Who could possibly be offended by a jolly, chubmeister that likes to shower kiddies with presents, but whose ideal probably arose from the legends of St. Nicholas?

What about the Christmas tree? it's origin is linked to the Christians of Germany in the 16th century. They bought them into their homes to decorate with candles for Christmas. Sure, they were used way before the 16th century by the pagans but the German Christians started the Christmas tree tradition.

The nativity, huh, well God only knows when that tradition was started but I think that if I was a betting woman I could pretty much win by a landslide if I said that it was started by the Christians to remind us of why we celebrate Christmas. The first to be recorded historically was one that St. Francis of Assisi created in front of a cave in Greccio, Italy in 1223. He created it because he was sick and tired of the greed and materialism that was rampant in Italy at the time. Can you imagine that today? Greed and Materialism during Christmas? I can't imagine that. HA!  Greed has been around since the very beginning. (Too bad Eve just had to have that darn apple.) I bet materialism started with her too (sorry Eve). I'm naked? I need fig leaves! I need more fig leaves, and more to match the season change. I need a satchel from a sow's ear to carry my apples in.... and on an on...

It makes me wonder just who these offended people are? Hmmm, let us ponder this.

Are they the Muslims? Umm, I don't think so. The vast majority of them are just ordinary people trying to live ordinary lives in a complicated world

Is it the Jewish people? I don't think it is them either. They are too busy at this time of year trying to find blue & white Hanukkah decorations, which are more elusive than the nativity scenes

The Buddhists, Hindus, Taos, Shintus, Wiccans, Sikhs? Nah, they are all pretty passive folks.

So who does that leave? Is it.... wait for it.... those that do not believe in God? Could it be those that do not believe in The Christ, His birth, and the celebrations and traditions surrounding it that are offended by all the hoopla of the season? Ding! Ding! Winner, Winner, Chicken dinner!

Seriously folks, DO NOT go softly into the night. Stand up and fight! CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS.
Christ is the light of the world. Christ is the greatest gift of all. Christ is the love that abounds during this time of joy. Christ is that baby in the manger and the King of Kings. Put up those Christmas trees. Sing those wonderful carols at the top of your lungs. Give presents to those you love. Say Merry Christmas to people you know and meet. Fight for Christmas and all that it stands for before it becomes just another day of sales at your local mall. "God bless us, every one."* Let us stand together as Christians.

Peace,

Mare

I Had An Epiphany Today!

It is the feast day of the Epiphany! Happy Three Kings Day, or as Tom referred to it last week Small King*s Day (confusing Little Christmas with Three Kings Day obviously). I will admit, I did laugh out loud when he said it. This weekend has gone by so quickly and it has been a blessed one. Friday night Tom, his girl Christina and I attended a party for our Adoration Group hosted by the church. I had, well we all had, such a good time singing all kinds of Christmas carols, acting out the 12 Days of Christmas song, good food, great people. Truly a merry night. Last night I went to mass at 5:00 pm followed by a short trip to the chapel. Today, of course, I headed to the chapel for my normal hours and I will be heading there again tomorrow night to cover for some snow birds who are flying to the warmer climate until the end of April. Truly it has been an uplifting, inspiring weekend thus far.

Christmas is the time for giving, obviously, but I decided to treat myself to some books too. I am just about finished with the first, about life after life. I am half way through a book about Padre Pio, written by a woman who knew him. The last one I am going to delve into is called Eucharistic Miracles. After having my own experience last year I am very much looking forward to reading it. Of course, my adoration buddy gave me the unabridged version of Book 1 of The Mystical City of God, which is on my list, as is finishing the Dolores Passion of the Christ and a few others. I have no idea where I am going to find the time to get through all of these, but where there is a will there is a way so I will get through them all in good time. Good thing the Mayans were wrong. I have too much to finish!

While on Facebook the other day I had another type of epiphany. Someone had posted about a loved one that had died, or a sick relative; I do not remember which. Last year, on Christmas day, someone had asked me to pray for a young couple trying to start a family. I said that I would. Of course, when I got outside and saw the clouds and then got home and saw the faces in the Eucharists I barely remembered my own name let alone the names of the couple I was supposed to pray for. I have seen them throughout the year and when I thought of them I would say a prayer, but, for some reason there were so many others that needed prayers that I almost felt as if God was saying to me it is not time yet for them. Well I met the young woman on Friday night and introduced myself. We chatted a little and I told her that I was going to start praying for her, and her husband. That is how God works; everything you ask for is on HIS time not ours, but now I am compelled to pray for them and so I shall, every single day until God works his wonders. But while on FB (which I go on every day for the business)  I noticed that there were so many that had responded to the one lone post. All said something like oh I will pray for you, or you are in my thoughts and prayers, but yet I wondered, how many actually DO keep people in their prayers? It is comforting to hear. It is a comfort to say it to someone. But what good does it do the person if you are just saying it and not doing it. Of course I do not know those that posted responses, nor the state of their soul, but it is very easy to just type the words of comfort and then go about your daily business. Some days I have the brain size of a hummingbird, that is why I keep a written list of all that have asked me for prayers. Please pray and pray often for those that need it. God does listen and He does respond. When your time for needing prayers arrives, and I assure you it will, wouldn*t you rather have someone actually praying for you then just making a comment? I know that I would.

One other thing happened this weekend that I just loved and I know that the man behind me did as well; it occurred at mass last night.  While there we sang The Gloria, which is the traditional way of praying it since the second century. The priest from the altar looked around at the congregation afterwards and said basically are you freaking kidding me? He said that looking around he did not see many mouths moving, therefore, many were not participating in the prayer that was being sung. He then said, okay, we are going TO DO IT AGAIN. An audible gasp escaped from the parishioners. Thinking oh boy my knees are not going to hold up for another round of this I turned to sit down. I found it amusing and while I was moving my coat to sit down I noticed that the man behind me was smiling as well. Together everyone present then sang only the chorus. I thought that was fabulous. What a difference when the whole church sings. Are we not there to praise our Almighty Father with prayers and song, which is considered praying twice? Are we in such a rush that we run out of the doors before the priest has given us his final blessing? Can we not spend ONE hour a week with God, in prayer and song. Let us all make this a New Year Resolution. Pray for those that ask you to pray for them, or those that have not but need them. Participate in your services and praise God for every good thing in your life and I promise you that God in his goodness will hear your prayers and recognize you when you stand before Him at the end of your time here, in the valley of darkness and tears.

Peace,

Mare

Christmas Miracles

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me......a partridge in a pear tree. Traditionally the song comes from England, somewhere between 1558 and 1829 when Roman Catholics were not permitted to openly practice their faith. Each line has a meaning which I will synopsize here:
Partridge in a pear tree = Jesus
Two turtle doves were the old and new Testament
Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love
Four Calling birds were the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
Five golden rings recalled theTorah or Law of the first five books of the Old Testament
Six geese a laying were for the six days of creation
Seven swans a swimming represents the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit - prophesy, serving, teaching, exhortation, contribution, leadership and mercy
Eight maids a milking were the 8 beatitudes
Nine ladies dancing were the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control
Ten lords a leaping were the ten commandments
Eleven pipers piping were the 11 faithful apostles
Twelve drummers drumming symbolized the 12 points in the Apostles Creed

Of course it could have been also written by a woman that had an incredibly rich husband or boyfriend that loved to shower her with gifts. I'll take 5 gold rings any day! Especially now with the cost of gold skyrocketing. Hopefully you know I'm just pulling your leg; it's a song of tradition not greed.

I had the most incredibly gorgeous Christmas I think I have ever experienced. We had opened our home and hearts to someone in October that had no place to go. We were so blessed to be able to share not one but two glorious meals sitting together as a family both on the Eve and on Christmas day. Afterwards Tom and I showered him with gifts. He hasn't had a Christmas with a family since he was a young boy; he's now 24. I think I can speak for Tom as well when I say that he and I were overwhelmed by the young man's excitement of opening his presents; a coat, a pillow of his own, pajamas, underwear just to name a few items. Things we take for granted. I got an even greater gift when I gave a present to his wife who has never gotten a Christmas present, EVER. It was just a simple saint bracelet that I had made for her.

Now I know that many of you that read this aren't Catholic but I do believe that something happened yesterday that is beyond explanation. I call it my own Christmas miracle. I am a Catholic and part of my usual Sunday routine is spending 2 hours in our church's Perpetual Adoration Chapel. The chapel is open 24/7 which means every hour of every day and night someone is sitting there with the sacred Host, which Catholics believe is the actual body of Christ once it has been consecrated. Well yesterday was Sunday so I went to the chapel as I do but had actually switched my hours from 12-2 to 1-3 so that my friend could go and be with her family on Christmas. I bought my camera along with me to take pictures of the beautiful Nativity. But when I was all alone in the chapel I was, the only way I could describe it is "told", to take pictures of the chapel itself. I didn't hear the voice with my ears, but I could hear it plain as day. The Host looked no different to me while I was in the chapel but I do have to say that yesterday I was so incredibly at peace; it was almost indescribable. In all, I took 3 photos, stepping back when I took the third. When I left the chapel I took some pictures of the Nativity (which I have shared here) and when I walked outside was met with the most gorgeous sky. To me it looked like a huge dove hovering in the blue above me. Took some photos of that too. When I got home and downloaded the pictures onto my computer I noticed the host right away. I see Jesus face. Tom sees a heart. His girl Christina sees people and both Erv and Abbie see a face as well. I've included a picture of what the host usually looks like in a monstrance; plain white so you can see (well anyone who is a Christian knows what a host looks like). Without sounding like a crazy person I believe it is a Christmas miracle and I wanted to share it with you. Look at it yourself and decide. Even behind the picture where the flash is reflected in the brass you can still clearly see the change in the Host. All of the pictures were taken with the same little polaroid digital camera that I have. Any one of you that has seen the website or some of the photos on here know that I'm in no way a professional photographer. I will say that here we are a day later and I still have that incredible peace within which is refreshing. BTW out of all the people that looked at this photo, I am the only one that is a practicing Catholic. The others are Evangelical, Baptist or Agnostic but we all see that the Host is changed.

I hope that your Christmas was magical, spiritual, and peaceful and would just love your comments on what you see in the photos. Have a beautiful week!

I wish you peace and joy!

Mare

UPDATE!! 7/20/17. The pictures were analyzed since this day, so long ago, and more recent posts have been made about them. Please do a search using the word "Eucharist" to see more about these amazing photos. The most amazing of all is the first one, where the flash went off. That one wasn't analyzed until last October (along with the others), and Jesus' face IS present in that photo and can be clearly seen. God blesses us all with this revelation. That is why I am sharing them with everyone.

The Babe

Oh silent though the night falls near
she lays her head upon the straw
In the darkened crevice of a lowly cave
she knows her Son will soon be born
A starburst ignites in the heavens above
as it dwarfs the other stars in the sky
when He comes into our world
and looks into her face
the teardrops glide down from her eyes
This young woman has loved
this babe in her arms
from the moment she was chosen to be
the mother of this perfect infant
who would grow to save humanity
But for now she can nurse Him at her breast
count His fingers and His toes
caress His face and watch Him sleep
Kiss His belly and His nose
A mother's depth of love is endless
that's the way it is meant to be
For to gaze into the face of your child
is a moment of sheer ecstasy.
